Atlanta's Black Gay Pride

Atlanta, also known as "Hotlanta" hosts their black gay pride event August 29-September 4, 2012. If any of you are travelling in that direction during this time, you definitely want to check it out. There's always something for everyone and the energy is uplifting. The first time I was there was in 2006 and  haven't missed a year since.

If you are able, I urge you to take advantage of this unique opportunity. Atlanta Black Gay Pride is an awesome event well attended by some friendly and fun-loving men of all ages. I know you won't regret the time you spend there. You'll also meet some terrific new friends!

Holiday Treat: Jumping The Broom

Logo TV's Noah's Arc was and probably will be, for many years to come, one of my all-time favorite TV series. The show was cancelled after only two seasons, and I plan a separate posting about the series later. The conclusion was a full-feature movie: Noah's Arc: Jumping The Broom. When it was released, I bought the DVD back in 2008; but, I never watched the movie. I was saving it for a "special day." Somehow, that day just didn't roll around until last week.

While spending the holiday at Sandy Hook, we discovered that Logo TV was broadcasting Noah's Arc: Jumping The Broom at 6:30 p.m. on July 4. The four of us decided that was worth us leaving the beach early and watching together. And we did. Yes, it was time well spent both in departing the beach and not seeing the live fireworks (not a biggie for me, I've never been a fireworks fan).

For me, it was a treat to watch the movie with my BF (he'd never seen it before, either). The fact that we'd both stayed current with the two seasons of the series meant that we didn't need to constantly explain plot nuances to each other. The couple that shared our room had seen the movie version before but enjoyed it again.

I realized, seeing the old characters perform again, how much I really did like this show. Yes, it was entertainment and not very realistic but it was fun and presented us with the opportunity to laugh at both ourselves and the intricacies of our gay culture. The movie, tying up the loose ends leftover from the series, offered us more of the same. In some ways, it was like revisiting old friends.

Jensen Atwood as Wade, the boyfriend, and Darryl Stephens as Noah, were an interesting couple on the screen. The actors portrayed their respective characters with honesty, originality and sincerity. Seeing this performance on the screen helped me bring some closure to the "friends" I was leaving behind, especially viewing the scenes with my BF and current friends. It was nice to know that, at least, on the world of TV-land, Noah and Wade were happy and together.

Sometimes, in real life, it takes the world of fantasy to guide us through the issues of our own lives.

The Ball Scene: Leave It On The Floor

The purpose of this blog wasn't to become a forum for endorsing movies. But, whenever I see one that features a preponderance of sexy black men, I just can't help myself. The reality is that when I discover one that stars openly gay black men, then the temptation is just too great. Leave It On The Floor, currently airing on the Logo TV Network, falls into this category. I've seen it, thoroughly enjoyed it, will watch it again (and again) and don't want you, the reader, to miss this opportunity.

For those who may not know, the ball scene, the ball culture or the ballroom culture are all terms for the underground gay subculture located in almost all urban areas throughout the USA. Members belong to families/houses, based on a particular fashion/style. Participants walk (compete) for trophies at events/competitions known as balls. Hence, the name and the setting for the film, Leave It On The Floor.

The film tells the story of an outsider, Brad, who's been thrown out of his house and onto the cruel streets of Los Angeles after his mother discovers gay porn on his computer. By luck, he stumbles into a ball, a confusing and startling underground gay scene. As Brad gets schooled into the intricacies of the ball world, we're offered an insight into a gay subculture that's often overlooked and unknown outside the Black and Latino homo-universe. Brad's journey is the journey of the movie, to where he will ultimately find home, love and acceptance in this new, most unlikely of places. 

Leave It On The Floor is an independent production that features an almost totally gay cast and crew. That fact alone warrants our support. It's a modern-day contemporary musical that reinforces the message to our young people that it's okay to be gay, transgendered or even to question our sexuality. This is important in light of the recent incidents of bullying and increased violence directed towards same gender loving teens and young adults.  

The movie stars young, talented and virtually performers. Ephraim Sykes (above, left) is Brad and Phillip Evelyn (above, right) is Princess Eminence. Both have leading roles along with Andre Myers as Carter, Brad's ultimate love interest and Miss Barbie-Q as Queef Latina, the house mother. Princess Eminence initially beds Brad, who is eventually won over by Carter. Phillip Evelyn is, in real life, an active participant in the New York City ball scene.

As a background for this movie's plot, is an excellent supporting cast and technical and production crews. The modern music is alive and moving, completely delivering this musical cinema into the lives of our youth. The dancing is a new experience that keeps the show alive with a mixture of both hip-hop and classical. The entire film is a tribute to contemporary gay life told through the tale of the ball world subculture.

Leave It On The Floor is scheduled to air again on the Logo TV Network on May 12, at 1:00 AM (ET) and again on May 28, 12:30 PM (ET). Check with the Logo website to confirm times and dates.

Think Like A Man...

We all know the widely-held myth that men typically think with their cocks. In all probability, in some cases, it's possibly quite true. All we need to do is consider all the scandals and troubles that we've gotten ourselves into by following our carnal urges rather than our better judgement. That's all the proof necessary to support this theory. At this time, that subject will have to take a back-burner position until a later date. But, there's another reason for the topic of this piece.

Think Like A Man is the title of a motion picture about to be released on April 20. Based on Steve Harvey's best selling book, "Act Like A Lady, Think Like A Man," the movie follows four interconnected and diverse men whose love lives are shaken up after the ladies they are pursuing buy Harvey's book and start taking his advice to heart. When the band of brothers realize that they have been betrayed by one of their own, they conspire using the book's insider information to turn the tables and teach the women a lesson of their own.

The film is a comedy and features an all-star cast. As the summary indicates, it's all heterosexual. Despite all this, I still plan to go see this piece. Aside from the obvious, the good-looking black men in leading roles, there's another reason I want to see this show. I'm curious as to exactly how much of the content, if any, is applicable to not only women, but to myself as a gay man. Is there any common bond between females and same gender loving men here? A secondary consideration is the comedy aspect, itself. The cast is talented and I'm in the mood for a decent laugh.     

The males starring in this picture are gifted and, truthfully, personally appealing. They include Michael Ealy (yes!), Kevin Hart, Gary Owen, Terrence J and Chris Brown (another plus) among others.

At the very least, I figure the entertainment and eye-candy alone are well worth the price of a matinee showing discounted ticket. If I learn any new techniques or strategies, well, that's a true bonus. Oh, did I forget to mention that some of the men in Think Like A Man are shown shirtless? A little skin is better than no skin at all!

Six Feet Under

Six Feet Under is an award-winning, groundbreaking television series that aired for five seasons on HBO from June 3, 2001, through August 21, 2005. It featured 63 episodes and was created and produced by Alan Ball. The series featured the Fisher family, a dysfunctional clan who operated a funeral home in their personal home, and all their friends and lovers. Due to its' quirky nature and intricate character plots, it was a hit with both domestic and international audiences.

I totally missed out on seeing the first season. It wasn't until I caught the first episode, by accident, of season two that I discovered the show and became addicted immediately. It became one of my all-time favorite shows, a place it continues to hold even today. What caught my attention and kept my interest was the gay relationship between the bald, handsome and hirsute Keith Charles (played by Mathew St. Patrick) and the conflicted David Fisher (actor Michael C. Hall). The ups and downs of this couple, as well as the sexy images of Mathew St. Patrick (couple both pictured above) fueled my addiction to this show and made it a must-see in my schedule.

Six Feet Under was a trailblazing show in several ways not often recognized in the mainstream (heterosexual) media. First and foremost, it featured a biracial same gender loving couple in positive and major recurring roles. To date, this accomplishment hasn't been repeated. Secondly, these two characters were both masculine men. Mathew St. Patrick's on-camera persona, Keith Charles, was initially a LAPD officer. Hall's role was that of co-owner of the family's undertaking enterprise. Both portrayed strong, vulnerable and volatile gay men.  Thirdly, St. Patrick's role was that of a black man, openly gay, out and proud. Michael C. Hall's was, at first, closeted and in denial. Stereotypically, the reverse is usually the norm.

Of course, Mathew St. Patrick caught my eye and my imagination. Seriously, what's not to like about the man? He's one handsome piece of eye-candy who often got me in hot water with the man that I was in a relationship with while the show was broadcast. Six Feet Under was the first time that I was exposed (no pun intended) to him as a performer. I regret that he hasn't had a role to equal this one since. I am planning to write more about Mr. St. Patrick in the future.

Six Feet Under received widespread critical acclaim, particularly for its acting and writing, and consistently attracted high ratings for the HBO network. It won numerous awards, including nine Emmy Awards, three Screen Actors Guild Awards, three Golden Globe Awards and a Peabody Award.
